About Tidal Basin
The Tidal Basin is a partially man-made reservoir between the Potomac River and the National Mall, created in the late 19th century as part of a land reclamation and flood-control project. It is world-famous for the roughly 3,800 Japanese cherry trees planted around its banks, a gift from the city of Tokyo in 1912, which draw huge crowds during the National Cherry Blossom Festival each spring. The basin is ringed by major monuments, including the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and the FDR Memorial, making the roughly two-mile path around it a popular walking and jogging route with continuous monument views. Visitors can rent paddle boats from a boathouse on the northeast shore in warmer months, and the basin is free to walk around at any time, though paddle boat rental has its own operating hours and fees.
