About Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, designed by Maya Lin and dedicated in 1982, consists of two 246-foot-long black granite walls set into the earth, inscribed with the names of over 58,000 American service members killed or missing in the Vietnam War, listed chronologically by date of casualty. The minimalist, reflective design was controversial when unveiled but is now regarded as one of the most powerful war memorials in the world. Nearby additions include the Three Servicemen Statue and the Vietnam Women's Memorial, both added in the late 1980s and early 1990s to broaden the memorial's representation of those who served. Visitors often make pencil rubbings of specific names, and National Park Service volunteers help locate names using directories at the site. The memorial is free, unticketed, and open around the clock.
