About National Mall
The National Mall is a landscaped park in the heart of Washington, DC, that has served as the ceremonial and symbolic heart of the nation since the 18th century. Stretching roughly two miles from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, it is bordered by the Smithsonian museums, the Washington Monument, and the Reflecting Pool, and hosts millions of visitors, festivals, and demonstrations each year. Managed by the National Park Service as part of National Mall and Memorial Parks, the Mall is free and open to the public around the clock. Its open lawns have been the site of historic events including Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech and countless presidential inaugurations. Visitors can walk or bike the length of the Mall, rent paddleboats near the Tidal Basin, or simply relax on the grass between museum visits. Because it connects so many major attractions, it functions as the connective backbone of any DC sightseeing itinerary.
