About Rock Creek Park
Rock Creek Park is one of the oldest natural urban parks in the National Park System, established in 1890 and stretching roughly north-south through the middle of Washington, DC. Its wooded valley along Rock Creek offers miles of hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, tennis courts, a horse center, and historic sites like the 19th-century Peirce Mill and Old Stone House. The park's Nature Center and Planetarium, near Military Road, offers exhibits, planetarium shows, and ranger-led programs, serving as a good starting point for first-time visitors. Rock Creek Park also administers several other green spaces around the city, including Georgetown Waterfront Park and Meridian Hill Park. Most of the park is open from sunrise to sunset and is entirely free to enter, with roads open 24 hours unless otherwise posted; some sections of scenic Beach Drive periodically close for maintenance or recreational use.
