About Renwick Gallery
The Renwick Gallery, housed in a striking French Second Empire-style building completed in 1874 and designed by James Renwick Jr. (also architect of the Smithsonian Castle), is a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum devoted to American craft and decorative art. It was the first building in the United States built specifically as an art museum. Following a major renovation completed in 2015, the Renwick reopened with an emphasis on contemporary craft and immersive installation art, alongside its historic Grand Salon, decorated in a 19th-century salon style with paintings hung floor to ceiling. Located near the White House rather than on the Mall itself, the Renwick is free to enter with no tickets required, and makes an easy pairing with a White House Visitor Center stop.
