About George Washington's Mount Vernon
George Washington's Mount Vernon is the historic estate of the first U.S. president, located on the banks of the Potomac River about 15 miles south of Washington, DC. The site includes Washington's restored 18th-century mansion, outbuildings, working farm with heritage-breed animals, gardens, forest trails, and his and Martha Washington's tomb. The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center houses artifacts and immersive exhibits about Washington's life, military career, and presidency, and a new exhibition, "George Washington: A Revolutionary Life," was set to open in 2025. Costumed interpreters, a distillery and gristmill, and several dining and shopping options round out the visit. Mount Vernon is open 365 days a year and charges admission; grounds passes cost more than a typical Smithsonian visit since it is privately operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, with additional paid guided tours available.
