About Eastern Market
Eastern Market is Washington, DC's oldest continuously operating public market, serving the Capitol Hill neighborhood since 1873. The indoor South Hall houses butchers, seafood vendors, bakers, and produce stands, while weekends bring an outdoor farmers line and an arts and crafts market with more than 100 local vendors. The market suffered a major fire in 2007 and was rebuilt with $22 million in city funding, reopening in 2009 with restored historic architecture. It remains a community hub for Capitol Hill, hosting a Tuesday farmers market in addition to the busy weekend markets. Managed on an interim basis by the DC Department of General Services, Eastern Market is a short walk from the Eastern Market Metro station (Orange, Blue, and Silver lines) and the U.S. Capitol.
