About Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, also called "America's Catholic Church," is the largest Roman Catholic church in North America and one of the ten largest churches in the world. Its Byzantine-Romanesque architecture and extensive mosaic work, including the dramatic Christ in Majesty mosaic in the dome, make it a striking pilgrimage and tourist destination near Catholic University. The basilica hosts multiple daily and Sunday Masses in both the Great Upper Church and the Crypt Church below, along with regular confession times, and has been visited by several popes as well as Mother Teresa. Guided tours are offered most weekdays. Open 365 days a year, the basilica is free to visit and offers free on-site parking, making it accessible even though it sits a bit outside the National Mall core, in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast DC.
