About Bethesda Terrace & Fountain

Emma Stebbins's 1873 Angel of the Waters was the first major public artwork in New York commissioned from a woman, marking the arrival of clean Croton water to the city. The terrace above descends by twin staircases carved with the seasons, and the lower arcade is lined with nearly 16,000 encaustic Minton tiles and often filled with music.
