About Miami Circle
The Miami Circle is a unique archaeological site consisting of a perfect circular pattern of 24 postholes, carved into the Oolitic limestone bedrock. These postholes are believed to be the foundation for a structure, possibly a ceremonial building or a council house. Discovered in 1998 during a routine archaeological survey prior to planned construction, the site quickly gained national and international attention. Dating back approximately 1,700 to 2,000 years, it is attributed to the Tequesta people, a Native American tribe who inhabited the area for centuries before European contact. The discovery led to a successful preservation effort, and the site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2009. The Miami Circle is an outdoor historical landmark accessible to the public. Visitors can view the exposed limestone formation with interpretive signage explaining its significance. It is located at the mouth of the Miami River, offering waterfront views and a connection to Miami's natural and historical landscape.
