About Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower, located in downtown Miami, is a prominent and historically significant building known for its Mediterranean Revival style, reminiscent of the Giralda tower in Seville, Spain. Once the headquarters for The Miami News, it gained lasting recognition as the processing center for Cuban refugees fleeing to the United States during the 1960s, earning it the nickname 'Ellis Island of the South'. Today, it is part of Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus and serves as an important cultural institution. Built in 1925, the tower is one of the oldest skyscrapers in the Southeastern United States. Its most notable historical role was from 1962 to 1974, when it served as the Cuban Assistance Center under the U.S. government's Cuban Refugee Program, providing medical and dental aid, resettlement assistance, and other social services to hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles. This pivotal period cemented its status as a symbol of hope and freedom for many. The Freedom Tower was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Visitors can explore the Freedom Tower to appreciate its architectural beauty and learn about its compelling history. It often hosts exhibitions and educational programs, primarily focusing on Cuban heritage and the immigrant experience. Located at 600 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL, the tower is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, providing ample opportunity to experience this important piece of Miami's past.
