About Art Deco Historic District
Comprising over 800 preserved buildings, the Art Deco Historic District is a visually stunning area characterized by its pastel-colored facades, geometric patterns, porthole windows, and chrome accents. This unique architectural style, a hallmark of the 1930s, offers a nostalgic glimpse into a bygone era of glamour and optimism, making it a living museum of design. Following a period of decline, the district was revitalized by preservation efforts led by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This initiative helped save numerous structures from demolition, securing the area's designation on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it stands as the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world, celebrated for its cultural and historical significance. The district is primarily centered around Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue, between 5th and 23rd Streets. Visitors can explore the area on foot, take guided walking tours, or simply enjoy the atmosphere from one of the many sidewalk cafes. Many of the historic hotels and buildings are still in operation, offering opportunities to experience the architecture firsthand.
