About Northerly Island
Northerly Island is a 91-acre peninsula on Lake Michigan, offering a distinctive blend of parkland and natural habitat. Once an airfield, it has been transformed into a green space designed for both wildlife and human enjoyment, featuring hiking trails, a fishing lagoon, and an array of native plants. Originally conceived as part of Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago as a man-made island for parkland, it later served as the site for the 1933-34 Century of Progress World's Fair. For decades, it was home to Meigs Field, a small airport, until its controversial closure in 2003. Since then, efforts have focused on ecological restoration, converting much of the former airfield into a thriving natural area with diverse ecosystems. Visitors can access Northerly Island by foot, bicycle, or public transportation, often connecting from the Museum Campus. The park features paved paths for walking and biking, a 5-acre fishing lagoon, and areas for picnicking. Seasonal events, educational programs, and concerts at the Huntington Bank Pavilion also draw visitors.
