About Cloud Gate
Affectionately known as 'The Bean' by locals and visitors, Cloud Gate is a massive, highly polished stainless steel sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor. Its seamless, mirror-like surface reflects the city skyline, the sky, and the surrounding Millennium Park in a distorted yet captivating way, inviting interaction and contemplation. Unveiled in 2004, Cloud Gate was inspired by liquid mercury and became an instant landmark. Its distinctive shape and reflective properties make it one of the world's largest permanent outdoor art installations, attracting millions of visitors annually. The sculpture's construction involved assembling numerous individual stainless steel plates, which were then meticulously polished to create its signature seamless exterior. Cloud Gate is located in AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park, at 201 E Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60602. It is easily accessible by public transportation and is a central feature of the park, often visited in conjunction with other Millennium Park attractions like the Crown Fountain and Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
