About Marina City

Marina City is a prominent Chicago landmark comprising two 61-story residential towers, commercial spaces, and a marina, designed by Bertrand Goldberg. Often referred to as "the corncobs" due to their unique, cylindrical architectural style with scalloped balconies, these towers are an iconic feature of the city's skyline, situated strategically along the Chicago River. The complex was one of the first post-war, high-rise residential projects to combine urban living with amenities and was a pioneering example of mixed-use development. Completed in 1964, Marina City was revolutionary for its time, envisioning a "city within a city" where residents could live, work, and play without leaving the complex. Its innovative design provided underground parking and residential units with balconies, offering panoramic views of the city and river. The building's architecture is a significant example of Brutalist style, yet with a softer, more organic expression than many of its contemporaries, and it has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and album covers, solidifying its place in popular culture. While the residential towers are private, visitors can appreciate Marina City's unique architecture from various vantage points along the Chicago Riverwalk or from a boat tour. The complex also houses a House of Blues music venue and other commercial establishments accessible to the public, allowing for a closer look at the base of these famous structures. Strolling across the Dearborn Street bridge or taking an architectural river cruise offers excellent photo opportunities and a deeper understanding of its impact on urban design.
