About Buckingham Fountain
Buckingham Fountain, officially known as the Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain, is one of the largest fountains in the world and a prominent landmark in Chicago's Grant Park. Designed in a rococo wedding cake style and inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, it serves as a central aesthetic feature for the park and a popular gathering spot for visitors. The fountain was dedicated in 1927 and was a gift from Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother, Clarence. It was designed by architect Edward H. Bennett and features four pairs of sea horses representing the four states bordering Lake Michigan (Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana). The fountain's central pool holds a significant amount of water, and its impressive water displays, often reaching considerable heights, have been a fixture of the city's public spaces for decades. Located at 301 S Columbus Dr, Chicago, IL 60605, the fountain is easily accessible within Grant Park, nestled between Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. Visitors can approach the fountain from various pathways within the park, and there is ample open space around it for viewing and relaxation. The surrounding areas of Grant Park offer additional amenities and attractions, making it a convenient stop for those exploring downtown Chicago.
