About Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks consists of two prominent hills, North Peak (Eureka Peak) and South Peak (Noe Peak), which are among the city's highest points, reaching approximately 922 feet (281 meters) above sea level. These peaks are a significant geological feature of San Francisco, formed by the uplift of Franciscan chert during the Mesozoic era. Historically, the peaks were known as "Los Pechos de la Chola" by early Spanish settlers, meaning "The Breasts of the Indian Maiden." Today, they are primarily preserved as natural open space, offering unique perspectives on San Francisco's urban layout, the Pacific Ocean, and the distant East Bay hills. Visitors can drive or hike to the designated viewing areas near the summit, where paved paths and a small parking lot provide access to various vantage points. The location is known for its sometimes strong winds and fog, which can dramatically alter the views.
