About Sutro Baths
Originally opening in 1896, Sutro Baths was an ambitious creation by Adolph Sutro, a wealthy entrepreneur and former mayor of San Francisco. This massive structure featured seven indoor swimming pools, including six saltwater pools that were filled by the incoming tides of the Pacific Ocean and one freshwater pool. The complex could accommodate thousands of bathers and also included a museum, an amphitheater, and various other attractions. After decades of operation, the baths eventually faced declining popularity and increasing maintenance costs. The property was sold in the 1930s, and plans for redevelopment into a high-rise apartment complex were made. However, a fire in 1966 destroyed the remaining wooden structures, leaving behind the concrete foundations and walls that stand today. The ruins are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and offer visitors a unique historical and scenic experience. The site provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the surrounding coastline, making it a popular spot for photography and exploration.
