About Palace of Fine Arts
Originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the Palace of Fine Arts was one of the few structures from the fair deemed worthy of preservation. Designed by Bernard R. Maybeck, it was conceived as a Roman ruin, intended to evoke a sense of wistful beauty and the transience of human endeavors. Over the decades, the initial temporary structure deteriorated significantly. Due to its popularity and cultural significance, the original building was completely reconstructed in the 1960s with permanent, durable materials. Further seismic retrofitting and restoration efforts have been undertaken to maintain its grandeur and ensure its longevity. Today, the Palace of Fine Arts serves as a public park and is a popular site for photography, quiet contemplation, and local events. Its iconic rotunda, colonnades, and surrounding lagoon with swans create a picturesque and serene atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
