About Mission Dolores
Founded on October 9, 1776, by Lieutenant José Joaquin Moraga and Father Francisco Palóu, Mission San Francisco de Asís was the sixth of the twenty-one Spanish missions established in Alta California. It is located in what is now the Mission District of San Francisco, offering a glimpse into the city's early Spanish and Mexican periods. The site includes both the original adobe mission church, known as the Old Mission, and the larger Basilica of Mission Dolores, constructed in 1918. The Old Mission church, renowned for its simple yet sturdy architecture, features original rawhide-bound roof timbers and intricate interior decorations, including a painted ceiling by native Ohlone artisans. Adjacent to the church is a historic cemetery, the only one remaining within San Francisco city limits, which serves as the final resting place for many early Californians, including native converts, Spanish settlers, and pioneers. The cemetery's tranquil grounds are filled with old headstones and a garden. Visitors can explore the Old Mission, the cemetery, and parts of the Basilica. The Mission provides an invaluable educational experience about California's colonial past, the Franciscan missionary effort, and the history of indigenous populations in the region. The address for the attraction is 3321 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94114.
