About Coit Tower
Rising 210 feet from the summit of Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower offers 360-degree panoramic views of San Francisco, including Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge. The tower, completed in 1933, was built with funds bequeathed by Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy socialite and eccentric who had a lifelong fascination with the city's volunteer firefighters. The ground floor interior of Coit Tower is adorned with a series of murals, created in 1934 by 26 different artists and their assistants as part of the Public Works of Art Project. These murals depict various aspects of life in California during the Great Depression, offering a unique historical and artistic insight into the era. Visitors can take an elevator to the observation deck at the top of the tower for breathtaking vistas. The base of the tower itself is accessible to the public, allowing appreciation of the historic murals without an admission fee to the observation deck. The tower is located at 1 Telegraph Hill Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94133.
