William Van Alen's 1,046-foot tower held the world height record for eleven months before the Empire State Building overtook it. Eagle gargoyles modelled on Chrysler hood ornaments jut from the 61st floor, and the marble and chrome lobby, with its Edward Trumbull ceiling mural, is open to visitors on weekdays; the observation deck closed in 1945.
