About Valley of Fire State Park
Valley of Fire State Park is a public recreation and nature preservation area located 16 miles south of Overton, Nevada. Its name comes from the red sandstone formations, known as Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting dunes 150 million years ago. These features often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. The park covers nearly 46,000 acres and is situated in the Mojave Desert, about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas. It lies at an elevation between 1,320 and 3,009 feet, and abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the east. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
