About Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Located about 15 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada, Red Rock Canyon showcases impressive sandstone peaks and walls, some reaching up to 3,000 feet high. These formations, including the highest point, La Madre Mountain at 8,154 feet, were formed by thrust faults like the Keystone Thrust, making the area a notable destination for hiking and rock climbing. A 13-mile one-way loop road offers vehicle access to many features and trails, and is also popular for bicycle touring, starting with a moderate climb. A visitor center is situated at the beginning of this scenic loop road. While most of the area is accessible by standard vehicles, certain side canyons like Rocky Gap Road require off-road or high-clearance vehicles due to unmaintained conditions. Near the southern end of the conservation area, visitors can find Spring Mountain Ranch State Park and the town of Blue Diamond. State Route 159, which cuts through Cottonwood Valley, provides views of the massive Wilson Cliffs to the west.
