About Hoover Dam
Constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression, Hoover Dam was a monumental effort, impounding Lake Mead and generating hydroelectric power for Nevada, Arizona, and California. The dam's construction involved thousands of workers and pioneered new techniques for building large concrete structures. Originally authorized by Congress in 1928, the dam was completed ahead of schedule by Six Companies, Inc. It was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935. The nearby municipality of Boulder City, Nevada, was originally built to house the workers for this project. Hoover Dam is located about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The Hoover Dam Bypass opened in 2010, rerouting U.S. Route 93 away from the dam's crest.
