About Fremont East District
Fremont Street is a notable thoroughfare in downtown Las Vegas, second only to the Las Vegas Strip in fame within the area. It is named after explorer John C. Frémont. Historically, the street was known for its abundant neon signs and was often depicted in media as a symbol of Las Vegas's bright lights, earning it the nickname "Glitter Gulch." This area has been home to several well-known casinos, including the Golden Nugget and Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, which is recognized as the longest-running casino in Las Vegas. While Fremont Street spans from Main Street to Sahara Avenue, vehicle traffic typically begins at Las Vegas Boulevard. It formerly carried several U.S. highways.
