Old Stone House

3051 M Street NW, Washington, DC 20007

Built in 1765, the Old Stone House is the oldest unchanged building in Washington, DC, predating the city itself. Originally a modest middle-class residence and workshop, it survived Georgetown's development pressures largely because it was mistakenly believed for a time to have housed George Washington's city planners. It is now operated by the National Park Service as part of Rock Creek Park, with rooms furnished to reflect 18th-century colonial life and a small garden behind it.

Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens

1550 Anacostia Avenue NE, Washington, DC 20019

This National Park Service site is the only NPS park dedicated to cultivating water plants, featuring ponds of lotuses, water lilies, and other aquatic flora along the Anacostia River. It originated in the 1880s when Civil War veteran Walter B. Shaw began growing water lilies from his native Maine on the site, later expanded by his daughter Helen Fowler into a commercial water-garden business before the federal government acquired it in 1938. Boardwalks wind through the ponds, and the gardens peak with lotus blooms in July.

Blagden Alley

Blagden Alley is one of Washington's best-preserved 19th-century alley enclaves, a hidden network of brick carriage houses and stables built to house the horses, laundries, and working-class residents that served the grand rowhouses of Shaw. Once considered a slum and later slated for demolition, it survived and is now part of the Blagden Alley-Naylor Court Historic District, its old stable buildings converted into art studios, offices, and restaurants. Tucked between 9th and 10th Streets NW, it retains a distinctly atmospheric, cobblestone feel unlike the surrounding blocks.
